Max Payne: Unrated Blu-ray Disc

Based on the 1990 video game series, Max Payne is an interesting mix of police melodrama, film noir and action with a slight supernatural twist. Mark Wahlberg plays Max Payne, a man obsessed with finding the murderers of his wife and child. He has an office in the Cold Case Files Department of the precinct he works out of, but he is a detective ready to explode into a hardcore rage at night when he lurks around the seedy underbelly of New York City trying to find clues for his case. A strange drug has hit the street that makes users hallucinate or sometimes it is subtly suggested that they might be just there, black angels that according to Norse myth, carry away the bodies of the righteous dead in battle. Somehow there is a connection between the deaths associated with this drug and the murders of Max’s family that takes him beyond the perceptible limits of the mortal world.

I have liked Mark Wahlberg as an actor ever since he appeared in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Nights just over a decade ago. Even before then, I thought he had given some strong performances in films like The Basketball Diaries and more recently his turn in Martin Scorsese’s 2006 Academy Award Winning Best Picture® The Departed was excellent. Wahlberg also is not above poking fun at himself in his films or seeing the humor of his persona as can be seen in Comedian Andy Samberg’s impersonation of Mark Wahlberg on Saturday Night Live in the hilarious sketch, “Mark Wahlberg Talks To Animals.” Wahlberg appeared on the show two weeks later looking to talk to Samberg in a backstage cameo. So he has a good enough sense of humor to laugh at himself and a film like Max Payne is a good fit for him since he has a bit of a tough guy image already. He certainly has come long way from being “Marky Mark.”

Visually Max Payne is stunning and is a film that is perfect for screening on Blu-ray Disc with a magnificent 1080p high definition resolution (2.35:1) widescreen aspect ratio with an invigorating English DTS Digital 5.1 High Definition Lossless Master Audio Theatrical Surround Soundtrack. French and Spanish Language Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtracks and English Subtitles for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired along with Cantonese, Mandarin, and Korean Subtitles are encoded on to the dual layered AVC encoded 50 gigabyte Blu-ray Disc. Both the PG-13 Theatrical Version and the Unrated Version, which is three minutes longer, are encoded onto the disc. Be sure to watch the film past the credits to see an extra scene that sets up a possible sequel. The disc is also enhanced for D-Box Motion Control Systems.

Extra value features include a lively feature length audio commentary for the unrated version by Director John Moore, Production Designer Daniel Dorrance, and Visual Effects Supervisor Everett Burrell that covers the task of creating a film that captures the essence of the game covering casting, story development and post production. High definition bonus material also includes a behind-the-scenes featurette, an animated motion graphic novel, several theatrical trailers for other Fox titles including Max Payne, two picture-in-picture behind the scenes tracks and bonus disc containing a standard definition digital copy of the Unrated Version for PC and Mac portable media players.
