Monday, September 21, 2009 will see the hit CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory return for it's third season and just in time for the season premiere, Warner Home Video has released the complete second season on DVD in a four-disc set packaged in a standard size keep case. The series stars Johnny Galecki (Leonard), Jim Parsons (Sheldon), Simon Helberg (Howard Wolowitz) and Kunal Nayyar (Rajesh Koothrappali) at four twenty-something geniuses working in government funded research for a local California university and how their lives are slowly changed and opened up by their neighbor across the hall, Penny (played by Kaley Cuoco), who is an aspiring actress, but makes end meet as a waitress. While she opens the guys up to a different world as alien as any physics experiment might seem to a lay person, they also change her in ways she never thought possible either. After two seasons the ensemble cast has captured the imagination of viewers with great pop culture references to genre films and television too. Created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, episodes are consistently funny without overplaying the premise and over the course of the season, one really grows attached to the characters and even relate to them since social networking and just going outside of the world of academia can be just as mind boggling as trying to figure out the mathematical formulas these guys have on their walls, which is based on real science and the DVD featuresa short on the show's science advisor David Saltzberg (10:09). Guest stars and or recurring players in the second season included Sarah Gilbert, Summer Glau, and Charlie Sheen.
Other extra value materials include a featurette with cast and show creator interviews about the second season (15:31) and a gag reel (8:52) too. All 23 episodes are presented in a matted widescreen (1.78:1) aspect ratio along with the extra value features and all of the episodes have a terrific picture quality with no visible grain whatsoever. English and Portuguese Language Dolby Stereo Soundtracks and English Subtitles for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired as well as French, Spanish, Chinese, Portuguese, and Thai Language subtitles are encoded onto all four discs as options.
